Cooking Gas Cylinder Subsidy Yojana
Why in News?
- Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has announced that Ujjwala gas cylinders will be available for Rs. 450 in the state from 1st January 2024.
Key Points:
- Subsidy Distribution:
- The subsidy will be directly transferred into the accounts of beneficiary women under two categories:
- Women under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
- Women holding the Below Poverty Line (BPL) card.

- Scheme Update:
- The scheme, previously known as Indira Gandhi Cylinder Subsidy Scheme, is now renamed Cooking Gas Cylinder Subsidy Yojana.
- Eligibility:
- Beneficiaries need to register under the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yojana to avail of the subsidized cylinder.
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
- Launch and Purpose:
- Launched: 1st May 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- Implemented by: Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG).
- Objective: Provide clean cooking fuel (LPG) to rural and deprived households. These households were previously using traditional cooking fuels such as:
- Firewood.
- Coal.
- Cow-dung cakes.

- The health of rural women, exposing them to harmful smoke and indoor air pollution.
- The environment, contributing to deforestation, and increasing carbon emissions.
