Various Memory Techniques to Memorize

Memory Link System

Memory Link System
What is a memory link? Memory link is a process of creating a link between a new fact and an already known fact.
For example, in the introduction blog we linked the country “Brunei” with the famous singer “BRUNo mars”
So we linked a new fact “Brunei” with an already known fact which sounds similar which is – “Bruno”.
We’ll see more memory-link base usage in our SIFY post. The link system is mostly use in remembering the things which are in sequence and pattern. For example – learning countries in a map or a list item.

Peg System

Peg system is a system of linking numbers to alphabets and words. We’ve discussed that numbers make no sense to our brain(a big reason for many students don’t fair well in mathematics).
Peg system denotes an alphabet to a number, and then using that alphabet we create a word(usually objects). Then we use memory link system to remember.

Peg system is used mainly to remember orderly list. It means to remember items with its position. For example- if there are 30 items to remember and you have to remember all 30 with their position.
In our system we use this to remember “YEARS” for our history topic.

Mnemonic system

Mnemonic System

Mnemonic system is creating a remembering point/statement to remember “terms/jargon”. Consider this “My Very Enthusiastic Mother Just Cooked Nachos”. Many of you must have heard this mnemonic to learn the sequence of planet in our solar system. Though its a useful tool, it has its drawbacks because you can’t create lots of mnemonics because recalling them can be tricky.
However we do use it, but we recommend to create an image for every mnemonic.

The one mnemonic we discussed above has no mention of solar system and you might get confuse while recalling. So visualize round planets in place of nachos in your plate and your mother is bringing them to you. So if we are making a mnemonic it is necessary to visualize and link the mnemonic.

Mind Palace

Mind Palace

Many memory champions use this method, to remember lots of data. It was highly acclaimed in the TV series “SHELOCK”, where Sherlock Holmes used his mind palace to solve a mystery.
The concept is to visualize a house, with rooms in it and these rooms have many objects. You can entitle each room with a subject/topic and each object in the room can be assigned to items to remember.

Mind map

Mind Maps

Mind maps are better and creative way of making notes. You can make notes in simpler language and in representative way. Various coaching institutes are providing their students mind maps, to understand and learn the concept easily. But we believe that you will remember a mind map better if you can create it on your own. However mind maps is more of a representative note making rather than a mind exercise. You are physically creating mind maps on a paper and not on your brain.

Memory Link System

Basics

Let’s try to learn important objects of topic, “Bedroom”. You’ve to learn these items in the sequence, in your usual way, and then try to recall it in the sequence provided.

Peg System

Basics

Peg system is assigning an alphabet to a number. The objective is to link the number to an object or a person. So that every number makes some memory for you.
Numerals makes no sense to our brain, numbers are some protocols that were taught to us and we were trained to identify them, but they are just some random drawings to brain. It means that you can’t visualize numbers. These are just stored in the hard wired part of your sub-conscious brain.
So how does it work?
Let’s see how we assign alphabets to numbers.
